Mérida won the acquisition prize at the IV Bienal de São Paulo in 1957, at the International Surrealist Exhibition in Mexico City in 1940 and III Bienal de Grabado Latinoamericano in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1974. Works by the artist have been widely , including shows at the Berkeley Art Museum; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Caracas. Important retrospectives have been organized by the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City (1981, 1992) and the Museo Metropolitano in Monterrey, Mexico (2000).
